Is Christmas Pagan?

So many people dread this time of year.

Maybe it’s because they are expected to spend money they don’t have on gifts others don’t need or want.

We have become a rich society with high standards, yet many of us still can’t afford to pay the power bill!

Here’s another thing. All this celebrating is getting more and more commercial every year.

What’s worse, the day we celebrate the birth of our Savior, Jesus Christ, really wasn’t his birthday in the first place. Originally, it was a pagan holiday.

So, many people believe we shouldn’t celebrate Christmas at all.

And then there’s the thing about bringing the evergreen into our houses like it says not to do in the Old Testament.

So lots of families have ditched the tree.
What’s a well-meaning family to do?

Here’s what I think.

Yes, the world has commercialized Christmas.
Yes, Jesus wasn’t born on December 25.
Yes, it was a pagan holiday.
Yes, we aren’t supposed to bring evergreens into our houses to worship.

But consider this.
The most powerful, successful country that has ever existed on the face of the planet focuses on one day of the year as its main holiday.

Our country certainly isn’t doing a lot of things right. But the fact that Jesus’ birthday is the highlight of the year should encourage you.

And giving gifts to others does remind us that we certainly DO have a lot to be thankful for because in all of our perceived “poverty,” we really have a lot.

So whether you celebrate Christmas or not, when you experience despair over the state of our nation, remember that not only is Jesus happy that we acknowledge Him, but He’s also on the Throne.

So many books, so little time...

Rhea, I agree with your thoughts here. I would prefer that people create Christmas every day of the year, in keeping Christ first and foremost and living this focus in their daily lives. Until then, keeping one day focused, for now, is a start!

Merry Christmas! Today and every day!!

Hello Rhea,

I just want to take this opportunity to say Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. In my humble opinion, this is a very important time of year. The Holidays are an important slice of americana, because Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year's are like one big, giant, long prayer that our whole country gives.

We have Thanksgiving first, just like we give thanks first. We then ask for what we need, which is what our Christmas wish list is kinda like. Then, we ask for forgiveness, which is like our New Year's resolution. We should honor and respect the entire holiday season as such. It is God's way of giving us redemption and peace in a time when peace and redemption are rare. It is a prayer that humanity gives, without even realizing it is giving it. It is a powerful time, with a powerful message.

How many people do you know who go to church once a year? What is the time they always go? It is this time of year, when the celebration of prayer God has given, that the world may know some peace, is offered. Upon reflection, I don't think it is any coincidence that Thanksgiving is a holiday in a blessed land, jsut before the celebration of Christ's mass, which has evolved into the Christmas holiday, nor do I think it is any coincidence that the celebration of The New Year was moved from April to January 1st.

These three important components of the holidays are God's doing, so that all may know peace; not just the Catholics, not just the Protestants, or the NDC's, Mormons, Amish, etc. When I think of the holidays, I think of a prayer. Reverence to the holidays is something we still enjoy as Americans, although this is under attack, and fading fast. I cherish these moments.

As I wish you Happy Holidays, it is with great reverence and respect to the powerful message of Christ, and not just a cliche that seems to be tiring as the world spurns Christ's message.

Merry Christmas, and a Happy New Year,

Your brother in Christ,
John
